ABOUT JAZALE’S ART STUDIO

Jazale’s Art Studio is a nonprofit organization based in Milwaukee Wisconsin that specializes in creative, community, and youth art after school/summer programming. Founded in 2012 by brothers Vedale Hill & Darren Hill as a method to give back to the community they are from. With grassroots work turn youth arts education experts, Jazale’s has become a staple in the Bronzeville and East side of Milwaukee.

A part of Jazale's mission is to offer programming to area youth at no cost to the children. This allows Jazale’s to offer underprivileged youth an opportunity to learn and practice creative skills, cultural meaning-making, real-world application of art and design, including but not limited to; visual arts (drawing, painting, sculpting, mural making), photography, music, media arts, community installations and more. Serving youth aged 5 to 18, Jazale’s is constantly evolving with its participants, honing in on their interests and needs as they age. Currently, in the development of their new community hub, Jazale’s will be an anchor tenant of HomeWorks Bronzeville. This will allow for community cultivation to continue, now offering mentorship, in the field training, and project management.

As Jazale’s is not only a nonprofit but an organization that serves as an advocate in the Black & Creative community, Jazale’s has been responsible for projects such as SPLASH! Jazale’s Edition, hosting Sculpture Milwaukee Summer Programing, Art House Trap, Jazz in The Hood [Milwaukee], and more. Through Jazale’s Art Studio Vedale and Darren hope to create positive change that surpasses just making art. Knowing the true impact of resources and representation, Jazales also serves as a community programmatic leader, forming creative based art initiatives that lead to creative placemaking and strategic placement of art projects that help improve safety and combats crime and vandalism. It also has an artists residency program in which talented local artists rent studio space at a low rate in exchange for volunteering their time and skills to provide creative and dynamic art programs for youth.

To continue to provide safer practices of art-making throughout the pandemic, the organization has also teamed up with community partners such as SHARP Literacy to create take-home art kits. These art kits allow participants to express themselves through guided projects that promote STEAM and self-expression. Each project that has been created thus far has culminated into large scale installation murals for the public to also enjoy, including Our True Colors mural right outside America's Black Holocaust Museum.

“We are rarities where we are from. We want to change that. Our youth having another way to succeed, like through art, should be the rule, not the exception.”
